Mouth of Truth
The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità) is an ancient marble mask located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. The massive stone disk, dating back to ancient Roman times, is famous for its legendary role as a 'lie detector.' According to tradition, anyone who tells a lie while placing their hand inside the mouth will have it bitten off. The enigmatic face, with its open mouth, hollow eyes, and nostrils, continues to fascinate visitors from around the world.
